Apache CloudStack
Want your own AWS but don’t want to remortgage the office? Apache CloudStack lets you build a full-featured IaaS cloud — compute, networking, storage, the whole shebang — with a web UI and a comprehensive API. It’s the “build your own cloud” kit that large service providers have quietly relied on for years while everyone else was arguing about OpenStack.
CloudStack has had quite the journey: it started life at Cloud.com, got acquired by Citrix, and eventually found a permanent home at the Apache Software Foundation. That corporate game of hot potato actually worked out — the Apache community keeps it well-maintained and surprisingly straightforward to deploy. Compared to some other open-source cloud platforms (looking at you, OpenStack), CloudStack is refreshingly opinionated and simpler to get running.
Why it matters: CloudStack gives organizations the power to run private and public clouds without vendor lock-in, proving you don’t need a hyperscaler’s budget to operate cloud infrastructure at scale.
